Old Filth

J'ai trouvé ce roman par hasard, en flânant dans une librairie anglaise. Une couverture colorée, une quatrième de couverture engageante, et surtout un nombre de pages convenables! (je déteste les romans fleuve, souvent à l'eau de rose et peu rythmé...)

Jane Gardam décrit ici la vie d'un avocat, né dans les colonies britanniques. A travers ce personnage, on est transporté dans l'histoire du Royaume Uni, depuis le glorieux Empire jusqu'à nos jours. La richesse et la complexité des personnages sont très bien rendues,dans un anglais abordable.

Bien sûr, je ne prétends pas saisir tous les détails! Mais ce livre réussi à me fidéliser, pages après pages.

I found this novel by chance, sauntering in an english bookshop. A coloured front cover, a welcoming back cover, and, espacially, a reasonable number of pages! (I hate interminable novel, usually corny and few rhythmic...)

Jane Gardam describes here a life's lawyer, who was born in the British colonies. Through this character, we are transported to the history of United Kingdom, from the glorious Empire to our days. The profoundness and the conplexity of the characters are really well-done, in a friendly English.

Of course, I don't say that I understand all the details! But, this book succeed in making me loyal, pages after pages.
